Health Insurance Business Application

For about ten years we worked with one of Germany's large statutory health insurers on the application its employees live in: the central internal business application, a Windows desktop system built on .NET and WPF, used by thousands of people every working day. The engagement covered consulting, UI/UX design and development, and it lasted long enough to see several generations of both the users and the code.

Making a dense application easier, not prettier

A case worker at a Krankenkasse processes cases all day, and the screen has to carry a lot of information without hiding it behind clicks. The UI work was a series of modernisations the existing users could absorb one at a time: redesigned core workflows for case management and processing, form layouts that make data entry faster, shorter click paths, and a set of UI patterns and component guidelines so that new screens looked like the old ones on purpose. Usability reviews and feedback sessions with the people using the system decided what came next.

The consulting that goes with it

Beyond the screens: architecture reviews and a modernisation roadmap, evaluating technologies and planning migrations, improving how the development teams worked, and carrying knowledge between teams that did not otherwise talk. The role was advisory, not managerial. The point of a ten-year engagement is that the advice can be checked against what happened.
